Welcome to Mrs. Duffy’s 5th grade!
Parents, please note I update my page each week with what is going on in each class as well as upcoming tests, quizzes and events!
Week of November 11th, 2019
* An item sheet went home for students to help fill bags for the St. Alphonsus Thanksgiving Baskets. Please have items in by November 13th so we can get them over to the Church. Thank you!
* No School on November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day!
* No School on Friday, November 22nd for Parent/Teacher Conferences!
Religion: We are beginning Chapter 9: We Praise and Thank God which continues to focus on parts of the Mass. We will be talking about what we are thankful for and begin the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We will also be talking about St. Maximilian Kolbe and how his love and sacrifice were like Jesus. There will be a Chapter 9 quiz on Friday, 11/15.
ELA: We are returning to our reading textbook until Christmas break. We are continuing Unit 5, week 3 with the theme of “What changes in the environment affect living things?” This ties in well with environmental concerns we have discussed in social studies. We will be finishing up our main story on Global Warming, review story vocabulary, and be finishing up comprehension skills and a mini lesson on adjectives. The story/vocabulary test will be on Friday, 11/15.
Social Studies: We continue with Unit #2, Lesson 3, focusing on the government of the United States. We will be talking about our 3 branches of government and the balance and responsibilities between state and federal governments.
Math: We began Chapter 6: Division of Whole Numbers and reviewing fact families. This week we will be reviewing two digit dividends, division patterns and estimating quotients. There will be a short Check My Progess Quiz on Thursday, 11/14. Please review with your child and have them practice IXL for about 15 minutes a night to reinforce the skills we are learning in class.
Science 5: We are continuing Chapter 2: Parents and Offspring and will be finishing up our last lesson on heredity and traits. I will be sending a study guide home this week. The Chapter 2 test will be next Tuesday, 11/19.
Science 4: We are beginning Chapter 3: Exploring Ecosystems. This is a short chapter. We will be looking at biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem, population and community, and then begin looking at the 6 different ecosystems and how they are different in terms of plant and animal life.
Wednesday: Technology and Gym
Friday: Library/Spanish and Gym
